In Conversation with Lesley James: Curtains, Craft & Considered Interiors
We sat down with Lesley James Curtains founder Lesley James to talk all things curtains and soft furnishings. From how she first got started to her approach to fabric selection, Lesley shares her insight into creating beautifully considered spaces, along with tips on how to make the most of your windows and avoid common design mistakes.
How did you get started in curtains and soft furnishings?
I’ve always had a love for sewing and originally started my career in fashion. An opportunity then came up to work in a curtain-making workroom for an interior designer, where I received full training. I quickly fell in love with it, and the rest is history.

What do you love most about helping clients choose fabrics from different suppliers?
It’s the excitement of the process. I love seeing clients’ reactions when they realise the possibilities available to them. Mixing fabrics from different suppliers allows us to create something really individual, and it’s that moment when everything starts to come together that’s so rewarding.

How do you decide which fabrics work best together in a room?
There are a number of factors to consider. Lighting plays a big role, as well as the client’s needs and how the space will be used. From there, we look at the scale of the windows and choose fabrics and styles that enhance each one and make the most of the room.

Are there any classic fabric combinations that you always recommend?
Every room is designed individually, but I always encourage layering tones and textures within a colour scheme. It adds depth and interest, and helps the space feel effortless rather than overly styled.

What’s the funniest or most memorable moment you’ve had while working on a project?
Looking back on past projects always fills me with pride, especially seeing how happy clients are with the finished result. One moment that stands out was a husband who was completely speechless when he saw the finished curtains, his wife found it hilarious as she said that never happens! They both absolutely loved the transformation.
What tips do you have for making curtains or soft furnishings a subtle statement?
Invest in good-quality fabrics and classic styles, they’ll stand the test of time. I also recommend using bolder fabrics as accents rather than the main feature, as they tend to have more impact that way without overwhelming the space.

What common mistakes should people avoid when choosing fabrics or curtains?
One of the most common issues is incorrect placement of the curtain rail or the wrong curtain length. Small adjustments can make a huge difference and really elevate the overall look. It’s also important to choose fabrics that complement the style of the room.
Which interior trends are you most excited about right now?
I’m really loving the colour palettes coming through at the moment, especially the beautiful greens and soft pinks that are featuring across new collections.
